Reading a move
How to use a premarket movers list
Answer in brief
Use the list to find news worth reading, not trades to copy. Sort moves by cause, ask whether the move matches the size of the news, and let the first minutes of regular trading show where real buyers and sellers are.
Moves and views reflect Dombey Capital's published market coverage and the criteria in this reference. It is not a complete feed of every move in the market.
Sort by cause before size
Group the movers: earnings, deals, trial or regulatory results, analyst actions, and no clear news. The last group is where premarket prices are least reliable.
Size the news against the move
Estimate what the news changes. A guidance raise of 3% that sends a stock up 25% may be overdone; a contract worth a year of revenue that lifts it 8% may be underdone. The desk's view on each mover is a written version of this check.
Let the open speak
Premarket volume is a small share of the day's. Many traders wait for the first 15 to 30 minutes after 9:30 a.m. ET, when spreads narrow and the full market has traded on the news.

Questions and answers
Should I buy a stock that is up big premarket?
Only if you have a reason the move understates the news. Buying because it is up is chasing.
What is the most common mistake?
Using market orders before the open, when spreads are wide and a fill can land far from the last price.
