Reading a move
Why stocks move before the open
Answer in brief
Companies release material news outside market hours so everyone can read it before trading. Earnings, guidance, deals, trial data, regulatory decisions and offerings cause most premarket moves.
Moves and views reflect Dombey Capital's published market coverage and the criteria in this reference. It is not a complete feed of every move in the market.
The usual causes
- Earnings and guidance: the most common cause, clustered in reporting season.
- Deals: takeovers, mergers, asset sales and spin-offs.
- Clinical and regulatory: trial readouts and agency decisions.
- Financing: share offerings, convertibles, debt.
- Analyst actions: upgrades and downgrades, usually smaller moves.
- Sector news: a peer's result moving a whole group.
Where to confirm it
Material events must be filed on Form 8-K within four business days, and most companies file or publish the release the same morning. Search the company on EDGAR or read its investor relations page.
Which causes last
Moves tied to changed cash flows (a contract, a guidance cut, an approval) tend to hold better than moves tied to sentiment (an upgrade, a sector sympathy move). Takeover bids pin a price close to the offer.
