Reading a move
Earnings gaps before the open
Answer in brief
An earnings gap reflects results and, more often, guidance against what the market expected. The call later in the morning can reverse the first reaction.
Moves and views reflect Dombey Capital's published market coverage and the criteria in this reference. It is not a complete feed of every move in the market.
Guidance beats the quarter
The reported quarter is in the past. Guidance for the next quarter and the year usually moves the price more, and so does any change in margin outlook.
The call can flip the move
Many companies hold the call after the release. Management answers on demand, pricing and costs can turn a gap up into a red day. Dombey's earnings call summaries cover what was said on the calls of the most traded stocks.
What tends to follow
Large gaps on heavy volume after a guidance change often keep drifting in the same direction for days. Gaps on thin volume with no guidance change fade more often.

Questions and answers
Why did a stock fall on a beat?
The beat was expected, guidance was light, or margins slipped. The headline number is rarely the whole story.
