Reading a move

Premarket volume and relative volume

Answer in brief

Volume tells you how many shares changed hands at the new price. A move on a sliver of normal volume can vanish at the open; one on heavy volume shows real repricing.

Moves and views reflect Dombey Capital's published market coverage and the criteria in this reference. It is not a complete feed of every move in the market.

Compare with a normal day

Divide premarket volume by average daily volume. Under a few percent is light; a fifth or more of a normal day before 9:30 a.m. ET is unusual and usually means news that matters.

Who is trading

Early trading is dominated by professionals reacting to the news and by retail orders. Large funds often wait for the open, which is why the opening auction can reset the price.
