Reading a move

Premarket movers: the category guide

Answer in brief

A premarket mover is a stock trading well above or below its last close before the 9:30 a.m. ET open, almost always because of news released overnight. A useful list names the cause and says whether the move is likely to hold.

Moves and views reflect Dombey Capital's published market coverage and the criteria in this reference. It is not a complete feed of every move in the market.

What this category covers

Earnings released after the close or before the open, guidance changes, deal announcements, trial results, regulatory decisions, analyst actions and filings. A move with none of these behind it is usually thin trading that the open will correct.

What a percentage leaves out

A 20% move on a few thousand shares means little. The same move on heavy volume after an 8-K means a lot. Look for three things beside the percentage: the cause, the volume compared with normal, and whether the news changes the company's value or only its mood.

Dombey Capital's place in this category

The research desk covers a handful of the day's moves in depth rather than every ticker. Each gets a written cause, at least three sources and a view with an end date. That makes the list shorter than a scanner and slower than a headline feed, but every view can be checked afterwards.

Turn the list into a decision

Read the cause, check the filing yourself, compare the move with the size of the news, then decide whether you have an edge. The premarket checklist sets out the steps.

Questions and answers

Are premarket movers good trades?

Sometimes. The move often reflects the news already, and spreads before the open are wide. The edge is in judging whether the market over- or under-reacted.

Why does the list skip some big movers?

If no company news or filing explains a move, the desk skips it rather than guess.
