Trading the open
Premarket and after-hours compared
Answer in brief
Both sessions are thin. After-hours trading reacts to results released at 4:00 p.m. ET; premarket trading adds overnight news, foreign markets and a night for analysts to read the numbers.
Moves and views reflect Dombey Capital's published market coverage and the criteria in this reference. It is not a complete feed of every move in the market.
Why the move can change overnight
The first after-hours reaction comes from the headline numbers. By morning the call, the filing and analyst notes have been read, so the premarket price is often a second opinion.
Shared risks
Wider spreads, lower liquidity, more volatile prices and the chance that a price does not reflect the regular session. Regulators list these risks for both sessions.

Questions and answers
Which session is riskier?
Both carry the same structural risks. After-hours moves on results can be sharper because the news is fresher.
