Trading the open
The premarket checklist
Answer in brief
Find the primary source, confirm the numbers, check volume, compare the move with the news, look for a halt or offering, set a limit price, and write down what would prove you wrong.
Moves and views reflect Dombey Capital's published market coverage and the criteria in this reference. It is not a complete feed of every move in the market.
The seven checks
- Primary source. Read the press release or 8-K, not a headline about it.
- Numbers. Compare reported figures with the prior quarter and with guidance.
- Volume. Is premarket volume a meaningful share of a normal day?
- Proportion. Does the move fit what the news changes?
- Supply. Did the company also announce an offering or warrants?
- Order type. Use a limit price; many brokers only accept limit orders outside regular hours.
- Exit. Decide in advance what would make you wrong.
Where the desk does this for you
Each mover the research desk covers has these checks written out in its analysis, with sources. Members also get the screener each morning before the open.

Questions and answers
Why check for an offering?
Small companies often sell new shares into a price jump. The extra supply can reverse the move within hours.
Why a limit order?
Spreads are wider before the open, so a market order can fill well away from the price you saw.
