Trading the open
Premarket trading hours
Answer in brief
US premarket trading runs before the 9:30 a.m. ET open, from as early as 4:00 a.m. ET depending on the venue and your broker. Fewer people trade, so prices move further on less volume.
Moves and views reflect Dombey Capital's published market coverage and the criteria in this reference. It is not a complete feed of every move in the market.
The sessions
| Session | Time (ET) | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Premarket | 4:00 to 9:30 a.m. | Thin trading, wide spreads, news-driven moves |
| Regular | 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. | Full liquidity, official open and close |
| After-hours | 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. | Earnings reactions, thin trading |
Broker access varies; some start later than 4:00 a.m.
Why the open matters more
The opening auction at 9:30 a.m. ET matches far more shares than the premarket session. It often lands away from the last premarket print.

Questions and answers
Can anyone trade premarket?
Most brokers offer it, usually with limit orders only. Check your broker's hours and rules.
Are premarket prices official?
They are real trades but not the official open. The official open comes from the opening auction.
