Trading the open
Will the gap fill?
Answer in brief
A gap "fills" when the price returns to the prior close. Gaps without a lasting cause fill more often; gaps caused by a real change in value, on heavy volume, tend to hold or extend.
Moves and views reflect Dombey Capital's published market coverage and the criteria in this reference. It is not a complete feed of every move in the market.
Signs a gap may fill
- No filing or release explains it.
- Light volume compared with normal.
- An offering announced into the move.
- The move is large compared with what the news changes.
Signs a gap may run
- Guidance raised or cut, not just a quarterly beat or miss.
- Heavy volume that continues after the open.
- A takeover offer or a binding contract.
How the desk's views use this
A Bearish view on a stock that gapped up is often a call that the gap will fill. A Bullish view on a gap-down stock is often a call that the sell-off went too far. Results are in the scored list.

Questions and answers
Do all gaps fill eventually?
No. That is a trading saying, not a rule. Gaps tied to a real change in value can stay open for good.
